Department of Psychiatry

About Department of Psychiatry

In today’s rapidly changing era, the study of the human mind, mental disorders, and neuroscience remains a field that demands extensive experience and continuous advancement within the medical field. Since its establishment in 1960, the Department of Psychiatry at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital has played a pioneering role in the development of psychiatry in Korea, introducing the country’s first Suicide Prevention Center, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry services, and systems for clinical psychology and social work, while actively contributing to research societies and clinical practice.

The department also takes the lead in advanced medical fields, including big data construction and analysis, as well as the development of digital therapeutics. Beyond the biological approach, the department emphasizes “caring for the suffering mind,” which encompasses mental, psychological, social, and spiritual care not only for psychiatric patients but for all patients receiving treatment at the hospital, thereby reflecting the core values of the Catholic mission. Building on its history and Catholic principles, the department’s specialists currently provide high-quality care through a variety of specialized clinics.
