About Department of Neurology
The Department of Neurology at the Catholic University of Korea College of Medicine was first established on September 1, 1986, when neurology services began at Yeouido St. Mary’s Hospital. In March 1988, the department welcomed its first neurology residents, firmly establishing its foundation at the Catholic University of Korea College of Medicine. Subsequently, neurology departments were successively opened at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital (formerly Gangnam St. Mary’s Hospital) in 1993, Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital and Daejeon St. Mary’s Hospital in 1998, Bucheon St. Mary’s Hospital in 2000, Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Vincent’s Hospital in 2001, and Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital in 2019. Today, neurology services are provided across eight affiliated hospitals of the Catholic Medical Center.
The department’s major clinical specialties span the full spectrum of neuroscience, including headache, neuro-ophthalmology and neuro-otology, neuromuscular disorders, peripheral neuropathies, neuroimmunology and infections, epilepsy, sleep disorders, Parkinson’s disease and movement disorders, dementia, motor neuron diseases, stroke, and neurocritical care. The department continues to broaden its scope of expertise and treatment areas.
Beyond clinical practice, the Department of Neurology actively conducts diverse research that drives progress in each subspecialty field. Medical students are provided with specialized education in neuroscience through both theoretical and practical training, ensuring the development of highly skilled medical professionals. Furthermore, through a well-structured residency program and training environment, the department has produced approximately 130 board-certified neurologists to date, contributing significantly to the advancement of neurology in Korea.
