About Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine
Established in 1960 at St. Mary’s Hospital, the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the Catholic University of Korea has grown into the nation’s largest department in its field, drawing on more than six decades of tradition and expertise. Today, our distinguished faculty and clinical instructors serve at eight hospitals within the Catholic University Medical Center.
Our department encompasses the full spectrum of anesthesiology and pain medicine, including clinical training for medical students, anesthesia management for all types of surgeries, the operation of specialized pain clinics for acute and chronic pain, intensive care, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by leading experts, we safely manage anesthesia for highly complex procedures such as heart, liver, and kidney transplants, open-heart surgery, major vascular surgery, and neurosurgery. Through continuous research, we also produce outstanding academic achievements.
All members of the department deeply understand the unique role of anesthesiology and pain medicine and share a medical philosophy that places patient safety above all else. Our medical teams work in close collaboration, ensuring thorough preoperative evaluation and the development of individualized anesthesia plans tailored to each patient. In particular, to minimize patient suffering from postoperative pain, our pain clinic is dedicated to ongoing research and development of innovative pain management methods.
We are committed to fostering an organizational culture where every member contributes their expertise while mutually supporting and respecting one another. This spirit of teamwork drives excellence in the intricate and demanding fields of anesthesia management and pain treatment, ultimately providing the highest quality of medical care for our patients.
