About Department of Microbiology
Since its founding in 1957, the Department of Microbiology at the Catholic University of Korea College of Medicine has contributed to medical education and research for over 60 years, with a focus on infection and immunity. In undergraduate education, the department provides lectures and laboratory courses for medical and nursing students that cover bacteria and viruses, immune responses, and mechanisms of infectious diseases. Various teaching methods are employed, including case-based discussions. Medical students gain fundamental knowledge through basic courses and lab work in microbiology, immunology, infection, and therapeutics, while research-oriented education is offered through elective courses. Nursing students are taught the fundamental concepts of nursing microbiology and the principles of major infectious diseases.
At the graduate level, the department offers master’s, doctoral, and integrated programs focusing on microbiology, immunology, virology, and genomics, with courses reflecting the latest research topics. Research areas include precision medicine using genomic analysis, development of diagnostic methods for COVID-19 and emerging infectious diseases, epigenetic links between chronic infection, tissue damage, and cancer, single-cell transcriptomic analysis for cancer metastasis prediction and immunotherapy development, molecular regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses in infectious diseases, T cell-based immune modulation to enhance vaccine efficacy, investigation of microbial environments and immune cell genomics in inflammatory diseases, and the development of cell therapies using immune cells. The department also contributes to addressing public health issues through research combining precision medicine and infectious disease response technologies, and leads academic advancements through collaborations with domestic and international research institutions. The Department of Microbiology at Catholic University of Korea College of Medicine continues to serve as a hub for infection and immunity research, bridging basic science and clinical practice, aiming to train the next generation of medical scientists and promote the expansion and practical application of medical knowledge.
