The Department of Neurosurgery holds a pioneering history in Korea, having performed the nation’s first procedures in aneurysm clipping, hypothermic aneurysm surgery, adrenal-to-brain transplantation, and transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary tumors. Professor Jin-Eon Song, who was appointed as the second chair in 1968, laid the foundation for the department’s advancement. Through the dedication of many professors since then, the department has grown into the largest in the nation, with 70 faculty members and, as of 2025, a record of 280 board-certified neurosurgeons—the highest number in Korea.

The department takes great pride in its leading role across all subspecialties of neurosurgery through innovative practices. It remains highly active in residency training, research publications, and educational programs such as refresher courses, further reinforcing its status as a national leader in the field.
