About Department of Laboratory Medicine
The Department of Laboratory Medicine originated from the Department of Clinical Pathology, established in 1960. In March 2006, it became an independent department, and by 2024, it has trained a total of 56 board-certified specialists in laboratory medicine. The department encompasses the divisions of laboratory medicine across eight affiliated hospitals—Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, Yeouido St. Mary’s Hospital, Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital, Bucheon St. Mary’s Hospital, Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital, Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital, St. Vincent’s Hospital, and Daejeon St. Mary’s Hospital. As of 2025, it currently comprises 32 faculty members and 9 residents. In 1983, by establishing HLA testing for transplantation immunology, the department laid the foundation for the nation’s first successful allogeneic bone marrow transplantation at St. Mary’s Hospital. Since then, it has played a pioneering role in molecular cytogenetic testing, such as FISH, contributing significantly to the development of Korea’s leading Catholic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Center. In addition, in 2009, it established the nation’s first genetic diagnostic testing center within the department, making a milestone in the diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases.
