About Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine
Occupational and Environmental Medicine comprises two fields: Occupational Medicine, which is dedicated to maintaining and promoting workers’ health and preventing occupational diseases, and Environmental Medicine, which focus on preventing, diagnosing, and treating health problems caused by environmental hazards.
The department was originally established in 1958 as the Department of Preventive Medicine (formerly the Department of Hygiene, renamed in 1960). It developed with a focus on occupational disease research and treatment, and became recognized as a subdivision of Preventive Medicine. In March 2013, it was separated and re-established as the Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
