About Department of Internal Medicine
The Department of Internal Medicine was established in 1954 with the founding of the College of Medicine at Sungshin University. Since accepting its first internal medicine trainee in 1960, the department has bult a history spanning over 70 years, producing more than 1,600 alumni who are active in universities, hospitals, and private practice.
As the largest department within the Catholic University College of Medicine, the Department of Internal Medicine operates through 11 specialized divisions, with approximately 400 faculty members working across 8 affiliated hospitals.
The department takes pride in its history of pioneering achievements, including the country’s first successful kidney and hematopoietic stem cell transplants. Today, the younger generation of faculty members continues this tradition with dedication and excellence.
The department’s research accomplishments have shown remarkable development, achieving a level of international competitiveness comparable to leading institutions abroad.
Internal medicine specialists become board-certified through a three-year residency program, followed by one or two years as a clinical instructor to obtain sub-specialty certification. During this period, the department provides a structured and comprehensive educational program to ensure the development of highly skilled specialists.
Looking ahead, the Department of Internal Medicine is committed to advancing cutting-edge medical research, developing innovative diagnostic and treatment methods, engaging in academic exchange with world-class scholars and research institutions, and nurturing exceptional medical professionals—all to meet the demands of the time and contribute to the advancement of medicine.
